First Female Winner of the Paddington Art Prize Announced Last Night At The 8th Annual Awards Event.

Margaret Loy Pula beat 68 finalists and was last night named the winner of the 2011 Paddington Art Prize, collecting $20,000 for the feat and national recognition at the 8th annual Opening Night and Prize Presentation held at the MENZIES ART BRANDS GALLERY, 12 Todman Avenue, Kensington.

Her work, Anatye (Bush Potato) was chosen as the national winner by judges Cressida Campbell, William Wright AM and Chris Antico. Two honourable mentions from Menzies Art Brands were awarded to Eva Napaltjarri Nelson and Kathy Parthenis.

This year the judges also added two Highly Commended prizes from Oxford Art Supplies and Chris and Samantha Antico to artists Christina Budden and Robyn Sweany and the Packers’ Pick, this year, went to Boyd Sanday.

Margaret Loy Pula hails from an incredibly distinguished artistic family. She is the daughter of well-known Aboriginal artist Kathleen Petyarre and the mother of Abie Loy Kemarre. Both Abie and Margaret were taught to paint by Kathleen.

Principal sponsor and founder, Marlene Antico, established the prize in 2004 to support contemporary artists by providing a substantial monetary award to assist them in developing their career and by offering the means of exposing their work to a wider audience.

The Paddington Art Prize exhibition will run from Tuesday October 4 until Sunday 16 October 2011.

The Paddington Art Prize would also like to thank their major sponsors and supporters the University of NSW, COFA, Menzies Art Brands, Art Treasury, IAS Fine Art Logistics and Hill End Artist Retreat, Evans Media Public Relations and Events Management, Woollahra Municipal Council, Wolf Blass, Tracey Deep Floral Sculptures and ArtCare Courier Service.
