ARTISTS STATEMENT

My small panel paintings of Sydney’s eastern suburbs began as a product of my
exploratory walks around my immediate environment. Painting these works en plein-air
allowed me to simultaneously examine the activities, sounds, and changing light
conditions of the places depicted. The finished paintings are the evidence of my
observations.

As a resident of Paddington, I am aware of the continual appearance and disappearance
of shops, cafes and houses. This ongoing evolution is characteristic of such a
highly sought-after place to live, work and play. While drastic changes like the Oxford
street upgrade have re-defined the look of Darlinghurst, other small changes are
also taking place around corners and back alleys. My paintings encourage the
long time resident to look again, and the passing visitor to reconsider the City as it
exists now.

Painting with oils continues to inspire a love for the medium itself.
Working on panel allows for a pronounced exuberance of brushstrokes as each
mark stands out from the flat support. My love of light has translated into a love of
strong chroma and I revel in the rich colours available today. I have had an
absolutely wonderful time painting these new works and I hope that my joy is
contagious.
