ARTISTS STATEMENT
Striations 1 is part of a broader series of work that explores the changing relationship
between urban and rural Australian landscapes. These works use a combination of organic
and inorganic materials as a way of rethinking the various dualities we use to order our
understanding of these landscapes – urban/rural, natural/artificial, here/there. Striations
1 focuses on the surface qualities of our everyday ‘natural’ and ‘constructed’
environments and illustrates how these surface-spaces come together in ways that are
comforting, fascinating, beautiful, and yet, at the same time, isolating or repellent. The
scratched, grooved and marked surfaces emphasise the changeable, irregular and weathered
conditions of our ‘natural’ surroundings and of our ‘artificial’ city environs and call
attention to the increasingly convergent nature of these two terrains.
